Sunny Side Up 2022 Bangwei Raw Puer

$4.00$125.00

Description

Returning for its 2nd consecutive year, this tea offers an uncommonly smooth and warm tone for a young sheng. A floral fragrance develops with each brew, alongside a consistent fruitiness and salivating quality. While the tea does well to endure many infusion, the aftertaste similarly persists in the throat, moving into the mouth and highlighting a brown sugar-sweetness.

Overall, this is a well-balanced tea, offering an intriguing flavour upfront, great lingering huigan and fragrance, and a strong, uplifting energy.

Made from younger arbour material from Bangwei, this tea punches well above its weight, offering a pleasant and enduring flavour at a very affordable price. We highly recommend this tea for both drinking now and storing for the future.

Many of our samples for spring 2021 are in dragon ball form. While these balls will perform the same as the cake, they can be slightly trickier to brew. Here’s how we do it:

Smooth and easy to drink but with enough rushy energy to jump start the day. Low fragrance with a bit of vegetable stock umami base. Nice general aftertaste. Nice smooth soup and body. A hint of easy to drink bitterness. Low stamina as you’d expect from young trees in this price range. Pleasant tea overall but not something I’d cake considering the competition in the same price range.

I’m finding this tea as rewarding as I get to know it better. Different brewing parameters bring out new qualities. I’ve enjoyed how some sessions emphasise fruit and some bitterness, while others have sweetness and light. I haven’t got to a specific favourite yet…Given how this tea seems to behave, I think it’s happy to keep me guessing each time! Definitely a fun and expressive tea if you’re happy to see where it takes you.

The profile of this sheng isn’t actually similar to a sunny side up egg – hate to be the bearer of bad news. But the profile it *does* have is very nice. The dry leaf is fruity and warm, despite not meeting with any heat yet. When the water does hit, I get zesty stonefruit skin, floral milk, and berry stalks. The flavor really amps up a sugary cream note with a smooth and pillowy texture. The breath out and aftertaste is where the florals come through the most to me, it’s almost hoppy in a way. (& if you’re looking for more egg imagery, the gold tone of the liquor kinda resembles an egg yolk)

Great but a bit light (for what I tested until now)
//Smell : Hay, small flowers, sugary, sauteed vegetables in maple syrup, honey, wet rock,
//Texture: Thick texture, rear teeth vibrating, hot spot at the back of the mouth, thick honey that lasts long
//Taste : Honeyed water (light and sweet), drying, wet hay, clean clothes drying on the clothesline, (a bit) salty
//Body sensation: Heat production and eyes awake

This is a good tea to start your day with if you just want a simple sheng that doesn’t require a ton of attention and you need some quick energy. More savory than sweet and some pleasant astringency and bitterness. Smooth mouthfeel but loses momentum pretty fast. Not bad for the price, though.

This review is written with the price in heavy consideration. I’ve been drinking this tea as my daily drinker sheng and it’s pleasant. I agree with the other reviewer who state it has a rubbery scent and taste, but the floral nature offered compensates somewhat. The soup looks clear and is pretty satisfying in the mouth, it’s quite thick and creamy when pushed. Lightly drying mouthfeel. Flavours I pick up are yellow/white flowers, vanilla, cream, rubber, tomatoes, caramell and smoke. The leaves have low endurance, so I wrap up sessions after 6 steeps.
