Eden 2019 Manzhuan Raw Puer

Description

One of our personal favourite new teas of 2018, we had to bring this back for another year, if not to at least selfishly have it for ourselves.

One change for 2019 is that this year’s tea contains a blend of the original garden (60%) and another nearby garden (40%). The quality of both gardens is excellent and they are very similar in profile and characteristics, but we found we were able to dial in a better balance between fragrance and body by combining the two. In both cases, the trees grow in gardens with no pesticides, fertilizer, weed killer or other chemical intervention. There were plenty of mosquitos and fire ants that were happy to remind us of that.

Flavour-wise, this tea retains an overall highly fragrant and sweet character. There are some light fruit notes in the front, as well as a nice, thick mouthfeel. This is a tea that we recommend taking your time with and savouring.

While beginners are free to try this to compare with budget offerings from nearby Yiwu, the qualities that make this tea something special are not necessarily in your face, but more nuanced and subtle. This tea may be suited to more experienced drinkers.

Doing a review on this tea right now feels a little incomplete because it seems so fresh and young. I think this tea would benefit immensely from even just a year or two to oxidize a little bit. I also think that it would age gorgeously after a decade or two but that should be obvious. Having said all that, the tea is still such an enjoyable experience right now. I got savory bakery aroma and fresh green notes after a rinse, and a surprisingly strong amount of flavor in the mouth and throat from the first steep throughout the session. The first and second steep had a medium texture and medium bitterness and both the texture and bitterness increased every time from steeps three through seven. I’m eight steeps in right now and it is still going.

I bought this one to age long term but caved in and tried one session. The mouthfeel was very rich and the sweet and savory notes were vibrant but not overwhelming. I’ll practice some self restraint and leave this cake alone for at least five years…

What a calm and gentle tea.

Honeyed water, ghee, unripe fruit, apples, soft broth.

Lots to ponder on here. A wonderful journey in taste.

The liqueur is a brilliant golden-yellow, the aroma is deep and the tea is full and enveloping in the mouth. The flavor is structured, intense, complex and dense with a powerful and long-lasting aftertaste with a strong aromatic charge. Despite its strength it is a balanced and very elegant tea, for meditation and for long tea sessions. it is definitely one of Bitterleaf’s best productions and I hope it will be produced again in the future.

I immediately fell in love with the artwork for the wrapping paper! When brewed in Jianshui zitao gaiwan, the tea itself smells so fragrant, floral and honey-like with fresh hay. It has got young, but vibrantly thick mouthfeel that is not so upfront, as well as long-lasting returning sweetness. On the other side, when brewed in an Yixing zini teapot, the fragrant floral and fresh hay and light honey notes are more subdued. But, in return, more depth to the liquor is detected.
