Description
Originally developed as an experiment, this tea has now become a yearly staple in our lineup and one that we look forward to each year. With slight adjustments in tea selection and formula from one pressing to another, there are always new nuances and characteristics to discover.
This year’s blend employs the smooth and rich character of Menghai shou puer with the fragrance and sweet qualities of traditionally processed Fengqing black tea. Overall this tea offers a nice salivating quality, with slight notes of spice.
While our 2022 pressing displayed more of the ripe puer’s character after a few infusions, this tea gives a little more equal treatment to both teas right out of the gate. With that said, our experience with previous pressings has shown that the flavours can be expected to develop and meld over time, exchanging dominance during storage.
At a price that fits any budget, this tea is also a great candidate for picking up a tong of, as it performs well both for drinking now and for longer term storage.

A very good and extremely tasty tea. The hints of chocolate fudge, malt and cocoa are clearly distinguishable in the wet leaves, followed by notes of hazelnut and biscuits. The sip is savory, enveloping, medium thick and with good persistence and balanced sweetness. It doesn’t last forever and it’s not incredibly complex, and I don’t think it wants to be, but in the infusions it manages to give it certainly remains an extremely enjoyable daily tea in which to find comfort.

Very relaxing tea session. Well balanced mix. An easy drinker.
//Smell: Coffee, candied fruits, warm chocolate chip cookies, hot chocolate, mild spices
//Texture: Spicy tingling on the tip of the tongue, medium texture, hot cheeks, smooth and vaporous
//Taste: Fruits coated with dark chocolate, earthy, dessert with roasted nuts on top
//Body sensation: Body heat, heartbeat noticeable in the eyes area, calm, serenity

One of my absolute all-time favorites! It’s almost like Mexican hot chocolate in the aroma of the dried leaves, as well as during tasting. I would almost venture to say it’s like drinking a chocolate-coffee-spice cake with vanilla. The dianhong is certainly mellow in the malt department as it usually is a very malty tea, but the puerh more than adds its own characteristics that makes this combination of two incredible teas a masterpiece. A thin, yet creamy liquor, gorgeous burnt amber color, sensational flavor, I can’t wait to pick up a ti and see how it ages over the years. Thank you so much Bitterleaf for being the pioneers you are with the experimental teas! This is an absolute delight!

A great blend that has the best of both teas! Strong tea energy but also very relaxing. Early, sweet, chocolaty, with a very small bit of spice. Thick, full-bodied soup that lasts many infusions if brewing gongfu style.

Great for when I’m craving an easy drinker with a lot of sweetness. The shou and hongcha blend is a winning combination for the fall / winter – comfort & warmth in a cup

Lasts a few infusions, you can taste both teas. Very enjoyable and a very good price, would consider order a cake later.

Rich, silky smooth notes of malty mousse and spiced dark chocolate flow from these gold-veined leaves, sips returning semi-sweetness, a heat and a pull from the earth. Aromas offer hints of soy, cinnamon, dough, rum raisin and a subtle green edge. Out of the three iterations of this blend I’ve tried, this year is easily my personal champ.
