Description
Made by an artist in Jingdezhen, this series draws its inspiration from historical events and art, creating stories that employ specific colour schemes and elements from the period it’s based on.
This particular gaiwan features a Ming dynasty style setting, a highly developed and flourishing period for both art and economy in China, while the colours and patterns also reference the neighboring countries that came to pay tribute to the dynasty.
The crane, a symbol of class second only to the dragon, was often used in embroidered patchwork for important officials close to the emperor. In this case the style of crane is borrow from a carving on old wooden beam.
